Cyprinidae family and mylopharyngodon genus. It is named after its black body and love for eating snails. The body is cinerous and the fin is grayish black. The head is wide and flat, the mouth is opened at the rostral side, and it has no barbel. There is 1 row of pharyngeal teeth, which are molar-shaped. Black carps inhabit in the middle and lower layers and mainly feed on snails, mussels, shrimps and aquatic insects. They are distributed in major water systems in China, especially plain areas in the south of the Yangtze River in China, and rare in the north of the Yangtze River. The black carp is an important fishery resource in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and lakes along the Yangtze River and the main object of aquaculture in lakes and ponds. Together with grass carp, silver carp and bighead, they are collectively known as “four major Chinese carps”. Their sexual maturity occurs at 4-5 years old. They lay eggs in the upper reaches of rivers, and can be bred artificially.
